Jewish Quarter Jerusalem

Tour Jerusalem’s Jewish Quarter

Jerusalem’s Old City is a 0.9km² area surrounded by ancient city walls and divided into an Armenian, Muslim, Christian, and Jewish Quarter that covers about 0.1km². Jews have lived here since the 8th-century BC, and on a tour of the Jewish Quarter (HaRova), you’ll see the 2,000 residents going about their daily routine. The lively neighborhood has many synagogues, Yeshivot for religious studies, and ancient sites. You can meander through the alleyways, or take an Old City guided tour to discover the many hidden gems.

Top Attractions of Jerusalem’s Jewish Quarter

  • Western Wall (also called Kotel or Wailing Wall) – The Jewish Quarter’s top attraction and the most sacred Jewish site in the world. This iconic wall was part of the Second Jewish Temple, destroyed in 70AD.
  • Hurva Synagogue Originally built in 1701, this synagogue was destroyed and rebuilt several times, most recently in 2010, hence the name “Hurva” or The Ruin Synagogue.
  • Herodian Quarter Wohl Museum – Consisting of excavated palatial mansions dating back to the Second Temple Period. Several museums in the Jewish Quarter display in situ archaeological remains from various periods. As new settlements were repeatedly built on the ruins of earlier structures, these museums are below street-level.
  • Burnt House – An excavated 2,000-year-old cellar of the Katros family home torched to the ground during the Great Revolt in 70AD.
  • Cardo Maximus – A restored section of the colonnaded Roman street that once ran through the city. Tour the 12th century Crusader bazaar built over the Cardo and now home to unique stores.
  • Ramban Synagogue-A 13th century synagogue.
  • Sephardic Synagogues-These four small synagogues stand where Rabbi Yohannan Ben-Zakkai had his yeshiva during the Second Temple Period.
  • Tiferet Israel Synagogue-Tour this Eastern European synagogue founded by Nisan Bek in 1865.
