City of David

Where is the City of David?

You might be wondering, is the City of David different from Jerusalem. Jerusalem is often called the City of David, but the name also refers to the City of David archaeological park where Jerusalem began. It is the excavated site of King David’s original city and located outside Jerusalem’s Old City walls, opposite the Dung Gate. In the Bible, the City of David is the name given to Jerusalem after it has been conquered by David. Over 3,000 years ago David left Hebron for Jerusalem where he established a unified capital of the tribes of Israel. The story of King David’s city is kept alive at this incredible archaeological site.

See Where Jerusalem Began

As successive settlements have been built on the ruins of earlier cities, the City of David archaeological site is below street level. As you move through the site, you’ll encounter structures and artifacts from different eras, including David’s palace residence and a Roman-era stepped street that once led to Temple Mount.

City of David and Hezekiah’s Tunnel in Jerusalem

If you choose to continue your tour further, you can follow the ancient underground water channels that supplied Jerusalem with water for over 1,000 years. Wade through knee-deep water along Canaanite water channels, that were chiseled out of solid rock in an amazing engineering feat. The Canaanite Siloam Tunnel (Hezekiah’s Tunnel) brought water from Gihon Spring to the biblical Pool of Siloam.
